Forward to the Swedish Edition (1878)

FORWARD

This work, left in translation, has been used at the Theological Seminary of the Augustana Synod since 1868. The teacher of Dogmatics at that time was Prof. A.[August] Weenaas, and it became necessary to translate the Norwegian original for the Swedish students. This translation, which has been used ever since, is now available, published mainly to save the expense of copying, for the benefit of the students. Since the esteemed author himself did not intend to publish the work in print, no final translation of the same has been taken by him, and he would perhaps also have wanted to undertake a revision here and there. We have had to publish the book as it has been used among us these years. This circumstance, however, may serve to explain some inconsistencies and irregularities. The translator in no way wishes to absolve himself of shortcomings and inconsistencies included; the list of typographical errors and corrections also shows many shortcomings, largely due to the proofreader's lack of time and his remoteness from the place of printing. Those who, outside the immediate circle intended, wish to become acquainted with this work, will probably be inclined to overlook all these shortcomings independent of the author, and accept it as it is.
